History

Shortly after the end of the World War II an organisation was founded under US supervision to pool all available knowledge relevant to security policy. This Organisation became known as “Organisation Gehlen”, named after its German leader Reinhard Gehlen. Ten years later, the Federal Government approved the foundation of the Bundesnachrichtendienst as a successor to the Organisation Gehlen and the only German foreign intelligence service.

Since then the Bundesnachrichtendienst has accommodated its structure as well as its mind-set to the political and cultural changes within Germany and the world. It adjusted to the topics and requirements of a multipolar world in the 21st century.

Nevertheless it is of particular importance to the Bundesnachrichtendienst to document and discuss these changes to structure and mind-set.
